Palazzo Medici Riccardi: the first private Medici palace in Florence

Palazzo Medici Riccardi was the first private residence built for the Medici family in the historic center, a perfect expression of Florence Renaissance art and architecture and a place where artists such as Michelangelo, Donatello and Botticelli worked.

The real jewel of Medici Riccardi palace is still the family’s private chapel with a cycle of frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, representing “The journey of the Magi”.

Our guided tour of Palazzo Medici Riccardi is entirely dedicated to Medici family. Originally, they worked as bankers, but they managed with cunning and intelligence to become one of the richest families in Europe and to settle in Florence political life, despite having no noble titles.

One of the first results of their success was the construction of the Renaissance palace in Via Larga, now known as Medici Riccardi Palace, which served as a model for the construction of the next private buildings.

This is the first palace in Florence where the Medici family lived and held both political meetings and elite parties; they enriched it with splendid Renaissance statues, a private garden with citrus trees and a splendid private chapel, frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli with images of the Magi Procession. A very precious cycle of Renaissance frescoes which, in addition to their traditional religious meaning, also represented an expedient to enhance Medici family grandeur, through portraits of its exponents and symbols of their power.
