The Church of Santo Spirito in Florence and the square of Santo Spirito are a necessary stop for whoever wants to experience the authentic Florentine vibe and is interested in discovering the city’s hidden gems. As a matter of fact, the church hosts inside the precious crucifix made by Michelangelo when he was only 17 years old, which is a representation of the artist’s deep knowledge of human anatomy.
The Church of Santo Spirito in Florence represents the beginning of a new concept of art and architecture, sine it’s the first real example of passage from Gothic time to Renaissance.
Showing itself as simple and elegant building, it’s the perfect example of the architectonic balance that characterizes Brunelleschi technique, the Renaissance genius architect who built it.
This is his last best work and keeps inside masterpieces of different ages, like a wonderful crucifix made by Michelangelo at the age of 17 years old, when he was hidden for several months in the sacristy of Santo Spirito church to dissect dead bodies in order to study human anatomy.
It was thanks to the anatomical studies made in this basilica that Michelangelo managed to achieve such knowledge and skill as to create his most important statue: the David.
The Church of Santo Spirito is located in the Oltrarno, the district of Florence on the left bank of Arno river which is considered the most authentic and lively area of the city. If you want, after the guided tour of the church you can enjoy a typical Tuscan aperitif in the many traditional bars and restaurants of Piazza Santo Spirito, very much loved by Florence locals.

Important Infos about the Basilica of Santo Spirito:
Santo Spirito Church in Florence is open to tourists every day except Wednesday from 8.30 am to 12.00 am and from 03.45 pm to 06.00 pm. During holidays the church closes one hour earlier, at 05.00 pm. The entrance is free, but you have to pay 2 euro to see Michelangelo’s Crucifix.
