As a matter of fact, the church hosts inside the precious crucifix made by Michelangelo when he was only 17 years old, which is a representation of the artist’s deep knowledge of human anatomy.

The Church of Santo Spirito in Florence represents the beginning of a new concept of art and architecture, sine it’s the first real example of passage from Gothic time to Renaissance.

Showing itself as simple and elegant building, it’s the perfect example of the architectonic balance that characterizes Brunelleschi technique, the Renaissance genius architect who built it.

This is his last best work and keeps inside masterpieces of different ages, like a wonderful crucifix made by Michelangelo at the age of 17 years old, when he was hidden for several months in the sacristy of Santo Spirito church to dissect dead bodies in order to study human anatomy.

It was thanks to the anatomical studies made in this basilica that Michelangelo managed to achieve such knowledge and skill as to create his most important statue: the David.

The Church of Santo Spirito is located in the Oltrarno, the district of Florence on the left bank of Arno river which is considered the most authentic and lively area of the city.  If you want, after the guided tour of the church you can enjoy a typical Tuscan aperitif in the many traditional bars and restaurants of Piazza Santo Spirito, very much loved by Florence locals.

If you want to discover other florentine churches, take a look at the tour of the main sacred & religious sites of Florence, where you will also visit the Duomo complex and the splendid Basilica of Santa Croce.
