A tour that will allow you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the historic center and will give you a different and suggestive perspective of Florence. We will start from Piazzale Michelangelo, a splendid panoramic terrace overlooking the city few kilometers from the historic center; we will admire rare and precious species of roses preserved in the adjacent Rose Garden, one of the best gardens in Florence even if it’s not so famous, and we will conclude with a guided tour of San Miniato al Monte to discover the mysteries and symbols of this ancient church.
Piazzale Michelangelo is the most famous viewpoint in Florence. It is a large square built in the nineteenth century on a hill few km from the historic center, by the architect Giuseppe Poggi and it’s named in memory of the great Renaissance artist. As a matter of fact, another statue of Michelangelo’s David, a bronze copy, was placed here on top as symbol of protection over Florence and its citizens and there was supposed to be also an entire Museum dedicated to Michelangelo, now replaced by an elegant restaurant.
Piazzale Michelangelo is an unmissable stop for those who love taking pictures and want to enjoy a romantic and more intimate side of Florence.
Just below Piazzale Michelangelo we can find the Rose Garden, one of the best gardens in Florence that welcomes about a thousand varieties of roses and other ornamental plants, including 350 species of ancient roses. The perfect time to visit the Rose Garden is in May, to enjoy the flowers and plants flowering. However, it is open all year round to admire some special types of roses that bloom even in autumn.
Last but not least we will end our tour in the Church of San Miniato al Monte, one of the oldest and most mysterious churches in Florence and the only one of its kind, dedicated to San Miniato martyr and subsequently granted to the Olivetan monks.
Right next to the San Miniato Church there is a small shop managed by the Olivetan monks, where you can find excellent herbs, wonderful oils and ointments and many souvenirs.
If you like naturalistic itineraries, take a look also at the landscapes and gardens of Florence tour.
