Pitti Palace Costume Gallery: a journey throughout the history of fashion from the 17th to the 20th Century

Pitti Palace Costume Gallery, also called Florence fashion museum, houses more than 6,000 pieces, including clothes and fashion accessories from the 18th century to today. An itinerary into the world of fashion to understand how it has evolved over time and how women’s bodies have had to adapt to the new standards of beauty.

Pitti Palace Costume Gallery collects historical costumes and dresses organized in chronological order in 13 different rooms starting from the seventeenth up to the twentieth century. The collection includes court and gala dresses, uniforms, haute couture clothes, prêt-à-porter pieces, theatrical and cinematographic stage costumes and also the funeral clothes of Grand Duke Cosimo I de ‘Medici, his wife Eleonora di Toledo and their son Don Garzia.

In order to better preserve the materials and fabrics the garments are made with, the collections are alternated every 2 years, thus allowing us to admire a huge variety of pieces and better understand the evolution of fashion over the centuries.

Among the many things to see at Pitti Palace, this guided tour at Florence Fashion museum is an excellent experience for those who are not only interested in the history of high end Italian brands known internationally, but also in less commercialized artisan products because of their extraordinary quality and uniqueness.

Take a look at the Florence high fashion and craft tour to visit other fashion museums and/or Florentine artisan shops.

With the same ticket of Pitti Palace Costume Gallery you can also visit the Palatina Gallery, the Silver Museum, the Modern Art Gallery and the other temporary exhibitions organized at the Palace.
Boboli Gardens, the huge garden wanted by the Medici family that it’s hidden behind Pitti Palace, can be visited purchasing a different ticket.
