Michelangelo’s David: the Renaissance masterpiece

With this Accademia Gallery guided tour you will learn more about the life and sculptures of one of the most genius and talented artist of the Renaissance: Michelangelo Buonarroti

As a matter of fact the Accademia Gallery is in the top 3 most visited and well known Florence museums thanks to the presence of Michelangelo’s masterpieces, such as “The capitives”, the artist’s “unfinished” marble giants representing prisoners, and the statue of David, perhaps the most famous sculpture in the whole world. The Accademia museum also houses other Gothic and Renaissance art masterpieces and a section dedicated to antique musical instruments.

The Accademia Gallery was founded in 1784 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena. His aim was to gather together all the painting and drawing schools of the city in one only official Florence art Gallery that enshrines all the artworks used by students to practice and exercise.

Over the years it was filled with a huge amount of paintings and statues and it changed several times its collections set-up until 1827, when it experienced a huge breakthrough with the arrival of the original Michelangelo’s David. From that year, the Accademia Gallery was rearranged with a different purpose: be introduced to the public as Michelangelo’s museum.

This guided tour will allow you to admire the statue of David, Florence symbol and  representation of Renaissance art perfection, but will also give you the chance to understand the special techniques and stories behind the creation of other Michelangelo’s statues here kept, called “the captives”.

This is just a short presentation of what we can see together during the tour but I don’t want to reveal too much!
