Florence has always been famous for handcrafted gold jewels and in 2019 it was also named “capital of craftsmanship” . With this artisans tour I will not only guide you to discover the city and its most important squares, but I will also accompany you through off the beaten paths where Florence artisans “hide”, to tell you about their history and the origins of their work.
The history of Florence craftsmanship is very ancient. Already during Middle Ages the city was organized into Guilds, association of artisans and merchants such as leather manufacturers, weavers, paper makers, perfumers, artists and many others.
Among them we could also find goldsmiths who had their workshops scattered around the city. As a matter of fact, the goldsmith’s craft in Florence has ancient origins and is now known all over the world because it embodies the mastery and skill of ancient artisan techniques together with the style and class typical of modern Made in Italy.
The place that houses the most beautiful and ancient jewelers of the city is Ponte Vecchio, also called the Old Bridge of Florence and today Ponte Vecchio Jewelers are famous in every corner of the world.
After telling you history, legends and curiosities about Florence artisans I will take you to visit a small goldsmith’s workshop in the historic center of Florence to meet some of the Ponte Vecchio Jewelers. Ther you can see the artisans at work while making beautiful gold, silver and brass jewelry and you will be able to discover more about the origins of Italian jewellery and its workmanship.
At the end of the artisans tour with me, if you want to find out more about the history, techniques and tools of Florence goldsmiths, you can stay in the workshop and participate in a goldsmith’s laboratory.
Here some expert goldsmiths will show you live all the important steps to create an handcrafted jewelry, first explaining the technique used and the properties of the chosen metal, then setting up the necessary machinery and tools and finally up to the ultimate stages of processing, engraving and polishing jewels.
You will also be able to admire some beautiful handmade rings, bracelets and many other gold jewels for women and men made at the workshop and displayed for sale, as well as requesting the creation of custom handcrafted jewelry, personalized according to your taste and your style, to be sent directly to your home as a tangible memory of your trip to Florence.
The visit to the goldsmith’s workshop is a unique experience to better understand Florence craftsmanship and the world that hides behind unique handcrafted jewelry, perfect if you are not only looking for high-end Italian jewellery brands but you are also interested in discovering smaller but equal value artisan products.
